After School & Home School Classes 2026
How Our Children’s Sewing Classes Work
Our children’s sewing classes are designed to build confidence, creativity and strong sewing skills in a supportive, at-your-own-pace environment.
Tuition Fee
Classes are offered on a tuition basis, which secures your child’s place in the class and covers ongoing instruction, guidance and skill development.
Learning Path & Skill Progression
Children who have never sewn before begin with hand sewing. This allows them to develop essential foundations such as fine motor skills, familiarity with materials and basic techniques.
From there, students progress through the Miss Mary method of learning to sew, completing a series of required projects designed to build skills in a logical, step-by-step way. These foundational projects must be completed before students move on to projects of their own choosing. If a child has already completed one of the projects in the school holiday program then they will just continue on with the next project.
The typical progression includes:
- Hand sewing
- Bunting
- Quilted cushion
- Fabric basket
- Shirred Skirt & Scrunchie
- Lounge Shorts or Pants
- Overnight Tote Bag
Project Fees
In addition to tuition, there is a project fee for each project, which covers the cost of materials.
Learning at Their Own Pace
Children progress at their own pace. A project may take approximately three to six weeks, depending on the child. This flexible approach ensures skills are learned thoroughly and confidently, without pressure to rush.
Our goal is to create a positive learning experience where children develop practical skills, patience and pride in their work while enjoying the creative process.
Requirements
From age 6 – 17. No sewing experience required.
If you are not sure if your child will love it before committing, please enrol into a holiday class as we do not offer trial lessons. Alternatively please contact Kelly to arrange to meet her and see the sewing studio, this can help with any anxiety the child may have when trying something new.

April SCHOOL HOLIDAY Classes
Please check back mid March for the timetable. In the meantime you can see some of the classes we offer.

ABOUT JUNIOR SEWING
This class is for young children wanting to try their hand at sewing. The children will have the opportunity to sew on a sewing machine assisted, as well as have a go at some hand stitching. We will have some projects available but this class is also encouraging of children making their own designs of small items. They can draw patterns, cut fabric, add trim, fill with stuffing, whatever takes their fancy. Cost includes all materials.
- Tuesday, 7th April 9:30am – 12:30pm
- Monday, 13th April 1pm – 4pm

ABOUT ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS
This is the Miss Mary signature class to get your young ones sewing. We learn how to use the sewing machine, machine safety, how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine, sew straight lines, pivot & reverse stitch. Children then learn step by step how to make their own bunting. This project is brilliant as it is repetitive and something they can continue making at home in their own time. This class is only for children aged 10+ unless they have completed JUNIOR SEWING and have been invited to attend. Cost includes all materials.
- Tuesday, 7th April 1pm – 4pm
- Wednesday, 15th April 9:30am – 12:30pm

ABOUT QUILTED CUSHION
This class is a follow on from the Absolute Beginners. You must have completed the Absolute Beginners before attending this class. We start to introduce seam allowance in this class, practice sewing straight, pinning, cutting & trimming and includes an introduction to the basic process of quilting. This is another class the children walk away from feeling totally accomplished. Cost includes all materials.
- Monday, 13th April 9:30am – 12:30pm

ABOUT FABRIC BASKETS
This is the class to complete after the Quilted Cushion! We will revisit working with a seam allowance, cut your fabric and lining, pinning, work with batting, sew handles, trim seam allowances and top stitch to finish off. If your seam allowances aren’t spot on with this project, it will not come together! This pattern will also available in the Miss Mary Shop as part of the learn at home series. Cost includes all materials.
- Tuesday, 14th April 9:30am – 12:30pm

ABOUT TEXTURED EMBROIDERY
Let’s do some Slow Stitching. In our fast paced world and our want for instant gratification there is nothing like working on a project that takes a bit of time. Embroidery is therapy for me and it can be as detailed as you like. There is no need to work from a pattern, children can make their own designs.
Children will receive a kit so they can take home and continue stitching. Kit includes a hoop, fabric, embroidery thread and needle. I’ll teach them several stitches, how to get their pattern on the fabric and how to present their finished work. This class is for ages 7+. Cost includes all materials.
- Wednesday, 8th April 9:30am – 12:30pm

ABOUT LOUNGE SHORTS
Another favourite…Lounge Pants/Shorts will include skills such as working with a pattern, pinning, cutting, sewing straight stitch, finishing off edges with zig zag, elastic casings and hems. Cost includes all materials.

ABOUT SEWING GROUP
A class designed for experienced young sewists who want to work independently on their own projects with guided support. Bring your machine (or hire) and bring your pattern, and let’s get making. Need help deciding what to make? Just ask and I am happy to assist!
